Born three months early at two pounds six ounces. Given last rites twice in the first 24 hours of my life. Passed over for promotion five times during my career before I made Captain. Twenty-nine years of active duty, twenty lives pulled from the sea, three Commandants advised.
I did not learn resilience from a book. I teach what was built in me under pressure.

Last rites twice.
I was born three months premature, weighing two pounds six ounces, small enough to fit in my mother's palm. I was given last rites twice in the first 24 hours of my life. My mother said, "If he makes it 24 hours, he'll be alright." I made it.
That beginning was not an accident. It was the first proof of the identity I would spend a lifetime teaching others to discover.
Passed over five times.
I was passed over for promotion five times during my career before earning the rank of Captain. Each time I allowed myself a one-day pity party. Then back to excellence. The organization was never my measuring stick.
The frameworks I teach were forged in those seasons. The stories are the proof. The frameworks are the transfer.
Twenty-nine years of active duty service.
Retired U.S. Coast Guard Captain. Decorated rescue helicopter pilot. I advised three Commandants of the Coast Guard, commanded complex operations, and led a campaign that reduced sexual assault across the service by 33% in two years. My final tour was as Deputy Director of the Health, Safety and Work-Life Directorate, second-ranking executive of a federal health directorate serving 42,000 people.
